A Profitable & Sustainable Business

Making your photography business profitable & sustainable

Looking to make your photography business profitable + sustainable? Looking to have the photography business of your dreams? Today, I’m giving you 3 steps to do just that.

Step #1: The What

You, as a photographer, have to niche in something. I don’t want to come to your Instagram account & hear that you do everything. Clients will not think you’re an expert, they will think you’re simply dabbling in photography and that you’re just in it for the money.

You need to be known for some type of photography. Not a lot of types. Not a few types. ONE. You have to start there or you’re going to be very disappointed in yourself.

LET’S DIVE IN: How Do You Choose What Your Niche Needs to Be?

  1. Write down all the genres of photography that you enjoy.
  2. Write down all the genres of photography that make you want to run!

Side note: This will change.

You will likely pivot at least once during your career.

Now, pick ONE.

Don’t just go with your gut or your heart feeling.

Ask yourself: What can I realistically show up for in this season of my life?

You can’t just look at the photography side of things…

You have to consider everything. This includes setting boundaries.

Step #2: The Who

Just because you said, “okay, Brooke, I’m going to be the go-to newborn photographer”, does not mean that your target market is not just any pregnant mom/new mom with a newborn, it’s time to dig deep.

WHO are you actually serving in your profitable and sustainable photography business?

There are so many variables here:

  • Clients that LOVE super-posed style newborn images
  • Clients that LOVE a more laid back, lifestyle newborn images

These two clients are two completely different target markets.

Add to these two different style types, you’ve also got to think about whether you are targeting people that want to come to you or people that are on a higher end where they want you to go to their home.

Dig into WHO is your target market.

Once you’ve nailed down your niche, think about all the sessions you’ve had in the past in this particular niche and ask yourself these questions:

  • Who did you work well with?
  • What bugged you?
  • What was the biggest challenge about working with someone in this genre?
  • How can you target someone or a different audience that would be a better fit for you?
  • What do they need to know?
  • What do they need to value?

STEP #3: The How

You will never be able to master this step if you don’t do step one & two.

The marketing doesn’t matter if you don’t nail down a niche & who you’re serving.

HOW do you reach the people you’re serving in your profitable and sustainable photography business?

Ask yourself where you can show up, how can you show up for them?

How are you going to communicate with your audience?

You have to remember that your clientele have values, preferences and style. It’s up to YOU to figure out who they are & how you can speak to them and get them on your calendar.
