Do you have a love/hate relationship with social media marketing for your photography business? Emma Tessler, the social media marketing mastermind of Ninety Five Media gives us an inside look as to how to tackle the one thing that can really help your business. During this conversation we discuss how to utilize social media marketing in your business, common marketing mistakes, and a breakdown of each platform.
http://Are you struggling to get an ROI on social media? You put all the work into creating content just for it to receive crickets. This may be because you are the same type of content on multiple platforms. Each platform is unique and values different types of content. A simple solution is to change your content based on the platform you’re marketing on.
Emma often finds that consumers are looking for different voices on each platform. For example, you could create an Instagram post that gives a preview of your blog post and uses a carousel of images featured and then leads a follower to your blog in the call to action. However, you don’t want to see a blog post on your Instagram feed. Be aware of how each platform caters to the audience and engagement.
Emma breaks down for us the three most common social media platforms with easy to remember descriptions. She offers up by comparison insight as to how to post on each platform as well. In detail, here’s a scenario for posting on each: you just shot an engagement shoot and are going to share on each platform. Here’s how:
Consider TikTok your high school best friend that knows you and wants you to be your weird authentic self. You call them on a bad day, you cry to them, and they know the details of your last relationship and break up.
When posting about your clients’ engagement, dive into their story. How did they meet? Did they break up? Have they gone through struggles? On TikTok showcase the story of this beautiful couple. TikTok viewers want the whole story with details. Then you can show them happily engaged and announce they are getting married in Tuscany next summer. Tell their story through video from them meeting, dating, and then end with their engagement session photos.
Think of Instagram as your co-worker- they know about your life in the moment! They don’t know a lot of the past. When they see you, you are more curated, dressed well and put together. As you are posting about the engagement shoot on Instagram showcase a carousel of curated photos you took. Your post should highlight how they were high school sweethearts, and they are getting married next year. The difference between Instagram and Tiktok is that Instagram is more curated with fewer details. It’s all about the moment.
Think of Facebook as your Grandma or distant relatives- You see them a few times a year and they see the highlights of what you choose to share. As you highlight the engagement shoot, share one or two of the best pictures. On your post tell the audience how you are so happy for them getting married next year, and you will be photographing the wedding. Short, sweet, and professional wins here.
Emma gives great examples of types of content for each platform. But at the end of the day, the client wants to work with you for you! They aren’t just hiring you for your clients you work with or the pretty photos you take. In general, remember your social media audience continues to draw to you and your personality. In either case, you’ve to show up as your authentic self when social media marketing. You are in the Era of Personal Media, make it work for you!
