Learn How To Grow Your Photography Business to Full Time Income This Year!
I can’t believe I’ve been podcasting for 5 years! We are celebrating with a giveaway and sharing 5 lessons I’ve learned in 10 years. Being a photographer has been both a whirlwind and the most rewarding journey. Keep reading to learn the 5 lessons for photographers! These lessons are for you whether you are at the very beginning of your journey or you are a seasoned photographer.
Let’s kick off the first of the 5 lessons for photographers. You can’t expect you business to be the same month after month. There will be times in your photography business when you are making the most amount of sales and booking the highest you’ve ever booked. You will also have months that are low and you feel like you are pulling teeth just to get people to book. This is normal and all a part of the entrepreneurial roller coaster.
You are not failure if you have a slow month or two. It doesn’t even mean you are doing something wrong. This is just how business goes. You can get yourself to a pretty consistent basis, but just know lows are a part of the business cycle. There will be natural highs and lows.
My biggest pet peeve in the photography industry is when photographers try so hard to look like each other. An example is the boho trend. It seemed at one point every single photography studio was decked out into the boho theme. I chose to lean the other way and go for a more modern and timeless look.
Lean into what you love and what makes you unique. This is what attracts your ideal client! Every single one of us comes with our own unique personalities and quirks and that automatically sets us apart from others. Stop trying to look like everybody else! Lean into your uniqueness and watch your business grow.
If you’re showing up to your marketing or your business with a negative mindset, that is the result you are going to produce. If you are telling yourself “I am in such a saturated area” or “there are so many other photographers doing what I do,” then that is exactly the business you will yield. Be very mindful of your mindset!
If there is one thing that wea re all guilty of it is that we are truly not consistent. Here’s a real life example of where I am NOT consistent – When it comes to working out, I cannot stay consistent for some reason. I have amazing weeks or months and then put it away for six months. Business is something that comes very naturally to me, but I know you struggle with marketing & business like I do with working out.
You will not wake up to the business you are dreaming of. You must be consistent!

Joy believes You don’t have to choose between the business you love and the people you love. This is one of the most important of the 5 lessons for photographers! It’s up to you to protect your boundaries and yourself from getting swept up in imposter syndrome. When you are a beginner, you feel like the smallest fish in the ocean. You worry that you are not good enough. Then when you get to the next stage in your business you start questioning different things. Imposter syndrome never fully goes away, but you can manage it!
Some of the ways I combat imposter syndrome is by muting people who make feel imposter syndrome, staying in community with people to talk me out of my feelings, and always having a coach or mentor in each season.
You have never fully arrived. Here’s the biggest mistake you can possibly make once you hit your goals: To think you’re above education, mentors, and growth. This applies to your mindset and business strategy. You do not have to be the best photographer on the planet to be successful.
I am always investing in the next course, skill, business coach, and mastermind because I know that I am the one that is capping myself and my success. Keep an open mind. Be ready for the next experience. Be ready for the next investment.
Those are 5 of the top lessons that i have learned int he last 10 years of owning a photography business. I hope you fund encouragement and were uplifted. If you’re ready to invest in your next level of success, I invite you to check out the From Broke to Booked Blueprint program.
