I truly believe that the fall season is the best time to do a price increase. The first reason that I say this is because most photographers are typically the busiest during the fall. You want to increase your prices when you are in demand and when you have people wanting to book sessions. Typically, every fall I am doing some type of a price increase in my own business. At the end of the day, it’s tried and it’s true. You should raise your prices when you are in demand.
I’ll give you my recommendation. I would increase your packages by a minimum of $50. I’d like to see you increasing your packages by $100-$250. However, you will have to take into consideration your goals, your current location, the amount of education and how much you have improved this year as a photographer.
I’m going to explain this from a business perspective. The reason that you want to raise your prices during your busiest season is because you are in high demand. The urgency has already been set up for you, everybody is racing to get their pictures in before the holidays. And as the weather cools off, people want to start going back outside and enjoying it.
Now, from a marketing standpoint, when things seem like they’re busy, when it seems like there’s not going to be enough, people start getting into the fear of missing out on something. That is why so many people will book you during your fall season. With that being said, when something is in high demand, people want it. You want to make sure that you don’t tell everybody that you’re increasing your prices because then people are going to say, “Oh wait, so nobody’s ever paid this much before?” You want people to automatically look at your work, look at your marketing and simply say, I want that!
I highly recommend you don’t do this. When a former client comes back in my business and I’ve raised my prices, I just say “I want to let you know, I’m going to send you over my updated investment guide. I have made some pricing changes, just let me know which package works best for you.” 99% of the time, they continue with no issues.
